The 1st Annual 6th grade Quahog Cup Games!

Last Thursday, April 12th, the 6th graders went to the farm to participate in the 1st Annul Quahog Cup Challenge.  The list of 25 books was introduced to the whole 6th grade in September. The students were asked to read ten of the books on the list and to make at least five FlipGrid video reviews. After all of this exciting reading, the 6th grade team of teachers created rotations that would challenged all t the students remembered and enjoyed about these great books.
Divided in teams of four or five students with brilliant Rhode Island "traditional" names including the Dels, Coffee Milkers, Pizza Strips and Donut Cakes, the day started with creating themed badges that represented team names, planning strategies and finally boarding buses for the farm. The rotations for each Quahog challenge were as follows:  writing and performing a rap that included elements from one or more of the books,
matching 1st lines to the titles of the books, finding the location of the stories on a map, the Book in a Box rotation adding student made artifacts to a story box, a Random Object Match and a Quahog Cup Trophy design challenge. This rotation required that the teams create a three dimensional, free standing trophy which included a quahog shell somewhere in the design and elements from one or more of the books. The trophy could have moving parts. Teams were limited to 30 minutes and the results were outstanding!

The 6th graders were enthusiastic participants in each of the rotations creating memorable moments and topping off the day with delicious donut cakes! Ah, Rhode Island! The Quahog Cup Reading Challenge, while new this year, was inspired by all of the fabulous independent reading the students do for the Rooster Games in 5th Grade and the Battle of the Books in 4th Grade (thanks Ms Strachan!). So, while it was the 1st annual Quahog Cup Games, we hope this new Wheeler and Rhode Island themed tradition will continue for many years to come! On to next year's list!
