The Rooster Games

On Thursday, February 21, the 5th graders from Wheeler/Hamilton and Lincoln School participated in our 17th annual Rooster Games.  Each student read at least 10 books from the 20 on the Rhode Island Children's Book Award list of nominees.
The kids spent Thursday morning playing games focused on the list.  They matched the title and author and the title and first line of each of the books.  They also answered 40 multiple choice questions in only 10 minutes!  We haven't had a group run out of time yet!  They matched an object to each book; created a poster using miscellaneous art supplies to represent one of the books without using words or symbols; and finally they had just 20 minutes to create a cheer for their team. We ended the day with a celebratory pizza lunch and a yummy cake.

The original purpose of the Rooster Games was to get kids excited to vote for their favorite Rhode Island Children's Book Award book.  Children in grades 3-5 who have read 3 or more of the books will vote this week.  The author of the book that wins usually comes to RI the following October to receive their award.

Thanks to all the teachers and parents who helped prepare the kids for the games.  Thanks also to the Lincoln School for their participation and all of the volunteers who helped out the day of the event to make it a huge success.  The Rooster Games are definitely one of the highlights of the 5th grade.  One fifth grader put it best, "It will be one of my favorite 5th grade memories!"
