Mock Caldecott Challenge

In January, Second graders chose their Mock Caldecott Winner. Students come together as an acting committee, look at about twenty picture books, select one winner and two to three honor books; previously known as runner ups.

Here's what our students are looking for when selecting a winner;

  • Illustrations that are well done
  • Illustrations that match the mood and theme of the story
  • Illustrations that are important to understanding the story
  • Illustrations that make children want to pick up the book and read it!

This year, our students chose, The Little Guys, by Vera Brosgol. Check out this Calling Caldecott LibGuide for our honor books and past class selections.

The Randolph Caldecott Medal is an annual award given by the Children's Division of the American Library Association to the best picture book published in the preceding year. The award is given specifically to the illustrator as it is an award that celebrates the pictures, and not just the words. You can learn more about the award and the Caldecott winners here.
