Summer Reading & Stories of Black Lives Matter

Summer has arrived it's time to share the summer reading lists for all grades. Compiled by the library staff, these lists include any work expected by grade level teachers and/or departments in English and Math, as well as those for sciences, languages, or elsewhere.

Teachers and departments put a great deal of time and thought into their selections, often finalizing these lists months before June. For the Upper School English Department, recent events provided the opportunity to highlight more Black authors telling stories of Black people just living. The department worked with the library staff, to create an additional selection of literature choices for students entering Grades 10-12.
The goal of this list is to provide a broader and deeper list of Black literary voices beyond what we are teaching as a part of our curriculum.
As English Teacher, Ann Bruno explained, we've "compiled a list of recommended novels, story collections, memoirs, works of literary nonfiction, poetry collections, and plays by Black authors to accompany the summer reading selections for the summer of 2020. While some of these selections are already included among our options for 10th-12th grade summer reading, the goal of this list is to provide a broader and deeper list of Black literary voices beyond what we are teaching as a part of our curriculum.... Students entering 10th-12th grade may choose any book from this list or from our grade level list as your summer reading choice. Of course, we encourage you to sample widely."

Faculty and staff also have some summer work, and that can be found by clicking on the Summer Reading for Faculty link below.
