2021 Rooster Games

On Thursday, March 5, we held our 19th annual 5th grade Rooster Games and our first ever completely virtual event. This is traditionally a highlight of the 5th grade year. Our goals this year were to create an event where kids and faculty could participate, whether in school or at home and to ensure that the students from Wheeler/Hamilton and Lincoln School could interact in real-time. Finally, we wanted the kids to have a great time. We were successful on all fronts.

We decided to look for the opportunities to create new activities that would leverage the online environment. We knew that our traditional poster and cheer rounds would be tricky to replicate virtually. Together the teachers and librarians, at both schools, came up with 4 new games to play. One round, called Who Am I, asked the kids to pick characters from the books and develop 5 statements about each person. Later in the day, they shared their statements with another team to see if the other students could guess who was the character in question. In another round we called the Word Generator, the 5th graders rearranged the letters in each book title to see how many new words they could create. Finally, we used some games created by Karen Mann, School Library Media Specialist in the Chariho Public Schools. In these two activities, kids matched the illustrations and quotes from characters to the titles of the books from which they came.

Our 5th graders did not disappoint. They knew their stuff. They rallied their teams. They had fun! It was so great to watch the kids work together to successfully complete the various challenges!

Special thanks to the teachers and librarians at Hamilton, Wheeler and Lincoln. It truly felt like a team effort. One of the 5th grade teachers said it best, “It was a little different, but it felt exactly like the Rooster Games”
